Katsushika Hokusai
Meet the Artist

Katsushika Hokusai

The genius behind 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa,' Hokusai is Japan’s most famous artist. A master of the Ukiyo-e woodblock print, he possessed an obsession with nature—particularly Mount Fuji. His work bridged the East and West, heavily influencing European Impressionists like Monet and Van Gogh. He called himself 'The Old Man Mad About Drawing,' producing thousands of images until his death at age 88.
